Oxford Year in Review #1 - The Oxford Canal

My time in Oxford officially came to an end on 30 August 2016.

Time passes by so quickly when one is having a good time. RC and I had an amazing year in Oxford, learning new things, exploring new places and making new friends. It was also an important year for us to build our relationship living together as a couple, and learning to adapt to each other's lifestyle.

To me, it was also a year of rejuvenation, rediscovery and reconnection. My health has improved a lot due to healthier diet and a stress-free lifestyle; I was able to explore my interests in arts, volunteer and get involved in events that inspired my mind; I also met up with some old friends, whom I haven't seen in a long time, and got to know new ones through RC's and my friends' connection.

To wrap up my year in Oxford, I have decided to write a blog post series about the things that have made life memorable in Oxford.

The Oxford Canal

On a good weather day, one of the things that we enjoyed doing was to walk along the Oxford canal. We would start from Summertown around late afternoon and head towards the city, reaching just in time for dinner.

The scenery along the canal is picturesque and exudes serenity. Many activities take place along the canal. People jog, cycle, fish, kayak, row or just sit around enjoying the scenery. Along the canal. you will find swans and ducks swimming in pair or group, oblivious to passersby, unless you have food to offer. Sometimes, if I came across a narrowboat that seemed to be occupied, I would try to sneak a peak to satisfy my curiosity of how life is on a boat.

What I enjoyed the most, was actually checking out the backyards of the houses along the canal and discussing with RC about which backyards we like, who we think live there, how nice it would be if we also live by the water, and what are the wonderful things that we can do at the backyard, yada yada yada...

The walk usually took us slightly under an hour, just nice as an exercise and a bonding session with my husband. This is something that I definitely miss back in Malaysia.

Exploring the Oxford Canal Heritage Trail - the Oxford canal connects to River Thames, and in the olden days, one can travel along the canal via a boat to reach London.

View of the Oxford canal in autumn.

Swans and ducks hanging out at the canal.

Overlooking someone's backyard from across the canal - I can't help but be envious of these house owners who are able to enjoy the change of scenery along the canal throughout the seasons.

That is a narrowboat behind me. People actually live in these boathouses; you can also rent one for weeks/months to travel along the canal.
